Born in China, Hewen Ma has shown herself to be an accomplished and versatile young pianist. As a soloist, she has performed at major music festivals in North American, Canada, and China, as well as winning top prizes in piano competitions. She participated in music festivals as a solo pianist and chamber musician, such as the Finckel-Wu Han Chamber Music Studio at Aspen, the Banff Summer Music Festival, Music Bridge, and the China International Piano Festival.
Hewen Ma was a winner of the Piano Honor Competition of New England Conservatory of Music, the First China Youth Piano Competition, and the Yamaha Scholarship Concerto Competition, playing Chopin Concerto No.2 and Prokofiev Concerto No.3. Ms. Ma has performed in Harris Hall at Aspen, Jordan Hall in Boston, the Shanghai Grand Theater, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra theater, and the Shanghai Heluting Music Theater. In 2015, Ms. Ma was a semifinalist of the prestigious Ima Hogg Competition (Houston, TX).
In addition to pursuing an active solo concert career, Ms. Ma is committed to playing benefit and outreach performances. In 2008, she collaborated with Canadian photographers for the Chinese Orphan Fund in Shanghai; in 2011, she gave a benefit recital in Dalian, China, to provide funds for pianos for an elementary school. At the New England Conservatory, Ms. Ma received a fellowship to participate in the Community Performances & Partnerships Program.
